Botox Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxin A) is an FDA-approved prescription medication used to reduce the appearance of facial expression lines in adults. This medication is administered as an injection. It works by blocking nerve signals to targeted facial muscles, causing these muscles to relax by weakening the force of their contractions. As a result, the skin overlying these muscles also relaxes, allowing wrinkles to lessen.

This procedure does not produce permanent results. The average response is 3 to 6 months of diminished wrinkles. Individual response may be longer or shorter depending on several factors (degree of sun damage, depth of wrinkles, size/strength of muscles, concentration of Botox used, and frequency of maintenance injections.
