Botox

Botox Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxin A) is an FDA-approved prescription medication used to reduce the appearance of facial expression lines in adults. This medication is administered as an injection. It works by blocking nerve signals to targeted facial muscles, causing these muscles to relax by weakening the force of their contractions. As a result, the skin overlying these muscles also relaxes, allowing wrinkles to lessen.

This procedure does not produce permanent results. The average response is 3 to 6 months of diminished wrinkles. Individual response may be longer or shorter depending on several factors (degree of sun damage, depth of wrinkles, size/strength of muscles, concentration of Botox used, and frequency of maintenance injections.

The procedure only takes a few minutes and produces only mild and brief discomfort for most patients. Most patients can resume normal activities immediately following the procedure. Results are usually evident in 1-2 weeks.

Potential side effects are usually mild and transient, and include: headache, bruising, swelling, injection site pain or stinging, asymmetry, and drooping of the eyelids.

Certain patients should not receive Botox injections, including women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, those with certain neurological disorders or bleeding disorders, or anyone with an allergy to any component of this or similar injections.
